Summary

The Senate Sergeant at Arms is seeking a Assistant Protocol Officer. The complete vacancy announcement and application can be found on the United States Senate Career Page at https://sen.gov/J5NY. Duties

Assists the Protocol Officer in planning, organizing, and executing protocol-related activities. Works in collaboration and coordination with Senate leadership, and other partnering entities such as the Architect of the Capitol, U.S. Capitol Police, U.S. Secret Service, and the House Sergeant at Arms office. Supports official visits by Domestic and Foreign Heads of State and their delegations to the Senate; supports the Protocol Officer as he/she manages a detailed schedule of movements/events, collaborates with appropriate security and law enforcement entities, and arranges greetings, escorts, and introductions as needed. Supports Senate participation in Capitol special events such as state funerals, statue unveilings, Congressional Gold Medal ceremonies, Joint Sessions/Joint Meetings, swearing-in ceremonies, and Inaugurations; assists in coordinating SAA entities in support of these events. Aids in the preparations and execution of official Senate delegations or CODEL logistics for large gatherings such as funerals and White House bill signings; includes managing Senator RSVPs and assisting in logistical communications and support. Performs other duties, as assigned, under the direction of the Protocol Officer and serves as the Protocol Officer in his/her absence.

  • Manages record keeping and event artifacts.
  • Assists with Executive office administrative duties and events and as needed.
  • Provides protocol-related customer service for Senate offices, including maintaining a scheduler contact list.
  • Fields SAA media inquiries to the Senate Sergeant at Arms.

Required Work Experience

  • 2- 3 years of protocol, Capitol Hill, or special event experience. Experience working with VIPs and high-profile individuals.

Required Special Skills/ Knowledge

  • Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing, and give directions calmly and with authority.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships, both within the SAA organization and with partnering entities, embassies, and Senate offices.
  • Superb organizational skills with the ability to multitask and manage competing priorities.
  • Maintains fluency in appropriate work applications, software, tools, and best practices in protocol and event management.
  • Ability to handle complex, sensitive, and confidential matters with discretion.
  • Ability to represent the U.S. Senate in-person to foreign leaders and their delegations, and in planning meetings.
  • Willingness to learn quickly and use Senate institutional and SAA organizational knowledge for problem solving.
  • Ability to implement protocol skills and knowledge for event and visit planning.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office environment and is generally sedentary except when supporting special events, visits, and/or Senate travel. In those scenarios, work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, and climbing stairs. The ability to travel by bus and plane is required.
