Summary

Duties

Maintains order, decorum, and protocol by enforcing Senate Rule #23, “Privilege of the Floor.” Monitors staff on the Senate floor to assure no disruptions in floor proceedings; assists as needed to Senators and staff. Assists mobility-impaired Senators on the floor and operate the electronic lift when needed. Collaborates with the Chamber Supervisor on the progress of Doorkeepers cross training in the Chamber. Assists Senators and staff during emergencies and assist in the evacuation of the Chamber. Other duties as assigned.

  • Assists the SAA during special events such as the State of the Union Address, Swearing-In ceremonies, etc.
  • Is available at all times for sudden recall in response to emergency events affecting the Senate campus/community and to potentially deploy to alternate sites to support the Senate’s contingency operations.
  • Must be on site when Senate is in session which may include late nights, overnights, weekends and holidays

Required Work Experience

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in the legislative branch, or any equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Required Special Skills/ Knowledge

  • CPR/FIRST AID CERTIFICATION.
  • Stop the Bleed.
  • Senate Rule #23, Senate rules and protocol for decorum in the Senate Chamber and Galleries.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully orally and in writing with Senators, staffers, and gallery visitors.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to use smart phones/tablets.

Working Conditions

  • Must be on-site when Senate is in session which may require long hours, overnights, weekends and holidays; sedentary for extended periods; work requires frequent physical effort walking, climbing stairs, sitting/standing on post for long durations; position requires regular interaction with public in galleries; excessive noise; required to carry items less than 25 pounds on a regular occurrence; occasional requirement for the carrying of item less than 50 pounds.
  • Since this position requires onsite presence in support of the U.S. Senate when in session, this position requires the employee to be available and prepared to work during government shutdowns, in inclement weather, on holidays, and during late night, overnight, and weekend sessions. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted.
  • This position directly supports essential services of the U.S. Senate. As such, this position requires the employee be available and prepared to work during government shutdowns, in inclement weather, on holidays, weekends, and during late nights to ensure essential services to the Senate continue without interruption. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted.

Education

Work requires a high school diploma (or GED).
