Duties

The Division of Analytics and Surveillance (DAS) in the FERC Office of Enforcement (OE) is seeking a motivated and skilled data engineer/data scientist. Leverage your skills in SQL, Python, R, and other programming languages to help your team build and utilize a data warehouse that drives DAS' wholesale electricity and natural gas surveillance dashboards and forensic analyses.

As a Data Scientist, some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Develop and maintain data pipelines using SQL/T-SQL, Python, R, Databricks, or Synapse to maintain a data warehouse, and other data products.
  • Use Power BI, R, Python, SQL, etc to analyze data and implement quality control checks. Assist other analysts to use these analytics platforms on occasion.
  • Use GitHub or Microsoft DevOps to version control your code and to collaborate with your teammates.
  • Clearly present findings, approach, and processes to the team, the Division, or management orally and/or in writing.

In addition to the education required for this position, you must have additional education OR one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level. Specialized experience is defined as:  experience developing analyses and processes using Python, SQL, or R.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including any volunteer experience.

The duty location of this position is Washington, DC.  Agency employees are eligible for telework and other workplace flexibilities. Telework days and waiting periods for eligibility are determined when an employee enters on duty.

If you meet the eligibility and minimum qualification requirements, your application will be further evaluated based on your answers to the vacancy questionnaire, using the Category Rating Method. This means you will be placed into one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified, depending on your responses.
