0401 - Natural Resources Specialist
A.
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

B.
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
1301 - Physical Scientist
A.
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

B.
Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
0819 - Environmental Engineer and 0881 - Petroleum Engineer
A. Degree: professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

B. Combination of education and experience: college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
1. Professional registration or licensure
2. Written Test
3. Specified academic courses
4. Related curriculum

(2) Specialized Experience:
GS-11
To qualify for the GS-11, you must meet either (A) Specialized Experience, (B) Education, or (C) Combination of Education and Experience for the grade to which you are applying.
(A). To qualify for the
GS-11, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the
GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
1. Interpreting scientific, technical, or engineering standards and applying techniques and procedures used for well plugging, environmental remediation, site reclamation, or similar activities; and
2. Researching solutions to difficult and complex problems concerning natural resources, physical science, environmental, or engineering challenges; and
3. Identifying requirements for technical reports/presentations or providing technical advice on scientific, technical, engineering, or environmental activities.

B. Education: You may substitute education for experience if you have achieved:
- 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree -or- Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

C. Appropriate Combinations of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience that totals 100% of the requirement for the GS-11 grade level. Note: Only graduate level education in excess of 36 semester hours may be applied toward the combination at this grade level.
GS-12
To qualify for the
GS-12, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the
GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
1. Interpreting scientific, technical, or engineering standards and applying techniques and procedures used for well plugging, environmental remediation, or site reclamation activities; and
2. Analyzing and researching solutions to difficult and complex problems concerning natural resources, physical science, environmental, or engineering challenges; and
3. Participating in the preparation of technical reports/presentations and providing technical advice on scientific, technical, engineering, or environmental activities.

GS-13
To qualify for the
GS-13, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the
GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
1. Interpreting scientific, technical, or engineering standards and applying techniques and procedures used for well plugging, environmental remediation, or site reclamation activities; and
2. Analyzing and recommending solutions to difficult and complex problems concerning natural resources, physical science, environmental, or engineering challenges; and
3. Preparing technical reports/presentations and providing technical advice on scientific, technical, engineering, or environmental activities; and
4. Contributing to the development of policies and/or procedures related to the oversight of natural resources, physical science, environmental, or engineering programs or activities.
