Job Description (Please follow all instructions carefully)

Summary

The incumbent operates a forklift to transport compressed bales of cardboard, magazines, newspapers, books, bottles and materials compressed by a baling machine. The incumbent also receives incoming vendor shipments and assists with disposal of waste materials such as cans and recyclable metals as well as ensures committee rooms and other areas where access is restricted to day operations are cleaned.

Duties

This position requires a valid D.C. or State driver’s license and a Certificate as a Powered Industrial Truck Operator to operate the Forklift in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.178 (l) (6).

*** This incumbent of this position is designated as “Emergency Essential Personnel” and is required to report to work in emergency situations. ***

The selected candidate will operate vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of up to 19,500 pounds to transport staff, supplies or equipment to and from Capitol Building operations locations.

Materials Handler

The incumbent is responsible for the following functions/duties: delivering a diverse range of products and other materials. Operates hand truck, pallet jacks, dollies and other material handling equipment to deliver stock to storage areas or job sites. Operates a forklift truck with a load capacity of less than 10,000 pounds and a height capacity of 168 inches or more. Controls stock movement, being careful to avoid overloading or improper stacking or movement of supplies and materials.

Re-positions large trucks at the loading dock bays to facilitate workflow or specialized functions.

Ensures safe receipt, storage and movement of hazardous and toxic materials and substances, such as paint and varnish removers, lacquer thinners and varnish in accordance with facility and regulatory requirements. Assists with movement of trucks, the trash compactor and dumpster. Receives formal and on-the-job training to oversee the handling of hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations.

Laborer Duties

Loads and unloads heavy bulky supplies and heavy construction building materials and supplies to and from trucks

Collects trash and debris from the assigned locations and surrounding grounds

Empties trash, garbage and other debris from receptacles located throughout the buildings and the grounds
