Duties

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for developing and implementation of a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) based safety program in accordance with the Installations’ Safety Programs, which includes but is not limited to occupational safety, fire and environmental safety, and health programs.  Conducts safety inspections/risk assessments and takes immediate corrective action whenever work safety or patron safety is compromised.  Identifies and implements strategies/processes to reduce life and safety risks.  Oversees the purchasing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure it meets or exceeds manufacturer recommendations.  Conducts quarterly safety inspections. Serves as Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) Fire Marshall.  Inspects all fire extinguishers and initial tags, parts washers, eyewash stations, and electrical equipment. 

Responsible for the proper identification, containing, labeling, storage and disposal of a variety of hazardous substances.  Ensures substances are properly handled and disposed of in accordance with applicable Federal, State and local regulations.  Performs or overseas the hazardous substance handling duties for customer generated hazardous waste is necessary.  Must select and safely utilize correct sampling procedures to ensure personal safety and environmental protection.  Manages a comprehensive inventory of hazardous materials and ensures Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are on file, current and available to all employees for their information.  Responsible for compliance with all base, State and Federal regulations pertaining to hazardous waste, air and ground contamination.  Provides appropriate guidance in cases of accidental spills or potential chemical injury.  Maintains statistical analysis for air quality inventories.  Maintains all records and makes distribution to required parties

Conducts MCCS Safety Council meetings at least quarterly.  Advises employees of available safety regulations, instructions, materials and equipment.  Promptly reports workplace accidents to the Human Resources Office.  Conducts mishap investigations. Ensures safety training is provided to all employees.  Ensures employees understand safety infractions that can result in disciplinary actions, and follows through with appropriate action. 

Plans and organizes work and manages positions to ensure maxim productivity for resources used.  Promotes all special programs such as the elimination of fraud, waste, and abuse in government. Will attend workshops and seminars to keep abreast of current VPP safety information, equipment, methods and trends

Provides superior customer service with an emphasis on courtesy.  Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner.  Acknowledges customers, smiles and makes eye contact.  Asks questions to determine, verify and solve problems.  Checks for satisfaction on the quality of goods and services.  Takes action to solve problems quickly.  Alerts the supervisor or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. 

Performs other related duties as assigned.

EVALUATIONS:

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   Bachelor’s Degree in Safety & Environmental or a related field appropriate to the work of the position

and

three years of experience in the occupation,

or a related field of work,

or

an appropriate combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of knowledge and skill equivalent to that gained in the above,

or appropriate experience that demonstrates that the applicant has acquired the knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to that gained in the above.    

Must have at least 3 years of experience that demonstrates knowledge of chemical coding systems, classification storage and disposal of hazardous materials. 

Must have 3 years of experience that demonstrates knowledge of OSHA and Fire Safety requirements. 

Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with military members of all ranks, as well as members of the civilian law enforcement community.

Ability to successfully complete and obtain/maintain a favorable background investigation at the ANACI level.

This is a white-collar position where occasional lifting up to 20lbs may be required.
