Summary

This position is located in the Office of the Commissioner. The incumbent serves as a Staff Assistant and provides assistance to the office on all matters relative to the coordination, integration, and needs of the office. The incumbent reports to the Commissioner.

Duties

The incumbent serves as Staff Assistant to one of five Commissioners whom are appointed by the President. Assignments most often cut across functional and program areas of the FTC and involve the application of methods, techniques and procedures required to fulfill the administrative needs and initiatives of the Commission. These assignments involve the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Establishes and maintains procedures for flow of work into and from the office.
  • Plans, organizes and directs office activities.
  • Prepares required travel authorizations and vouchers for all staff in the office.
  • Schedules appointments and maintains Commissioner's calendar.
  • Coordinates with the Office of the General Counsel Ethics Office for approval of travel and speaking engagements.
  • Oversees office space for the Commissioner's office including maintenance of equipment needs, furniture, and office supplies.
  • Monitors the office budget, ensuring restrictions are met for all expenditures.
  • Drafts and reviews replies for content and conformance with established policy, grammatical correctness and appearance before referring it to the Commissioner for consideration.
  • Manages all incoming correspondence directed to the Commissioner; determines which mail is appropriately handled by the incumbent, the Commissioner, other members of the Commissioner's staff or bureaus of the Commission.
  • Routes mail to appropriate office for disposition.
  • Drafts letters based on the Commissioner's personal views and policies.
  • Manages the Commissioner's paper and electronic files.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-11, you must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience is defined as:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of administrative policies and practices and the skill to apply this knowledge to providing daily office functions such as receiving callers and visitors; scheduling conferences and meetings; preparing travel arrangements, purchasing and maintaining office furniture, equipment and supplies; drafting and reviewing correspondence;
  • Maintaining a calendar and scheduling appointments for senior agency leadership or senior level staff in a large law firm and utilizing advanced computer skills including legal research software;
  • Ability to conduct research and gather facts; handle administrative duties with respect to accounting, budget and billing; and
  • Open, close, and maintain paper and electronic files and liaise with clients and other attorneys on file progress, conducting research and make recommendations to senior agency leadership or senior level staff in a large law firm.

PhD or equivalent doctoral degree.

Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree

NOTE: Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.

Education
